Wedding & Large Event FAQ

  • Weddings and large events should be booked between 4-12 months prior. We like to give our full attention to one year of wedding clients at a time. This means our books for the next year open in the fall and the best season for consultations and planning is November - May. We require final details to be locked in one month before the celebration.

  • Both of these items are customizable in flavor, design notes, colors, messages, etc! The majority of our orders fall under the signature level of design. Fully custom levels of design include the following: carved/shaped cakes, very intricate details, many color frostings to pipe (more than 5), fondant covered cakes, fondant sculptures, intricate fondant detail. Fill out the form to your best guess and we will let you know if the design notes fit better in one than another. Most themes can be executed in either one just with a different level of our decorating time and effort contributing to the price difference.

  • We will help you scale your cake tier(s) to either a certain aesthetic, a certain number of servings, or work to fit a budget you have in mind. Many larger events will offer a small decorated cake and then have back of house kitchen cakes that have less finesse but are just as delicious. These servings are cheaper per slice which can help create some savings on the bottom line.

  • We recommend ordering cake slices to the exact number of servings you want including your guest count and wanted leftovers. We recommend ordering 1.25x the number of regular cupcakes to your guest count and 1.75x for petites. For dessert bars, we recommend having 2.5-3x the number of guests in total number of servings broken up between the different items you have selected. Don’t panic, we are celebration experts and are happy to talk it out with you.

  • Be interesting. It’s okay to pick YOUR favorites for your celebrations and not only steer toward people pleasers. If you have room to pick a lot of items, then we recommend hitting these 4 categories (even if one flavor hits multiple): light and simple, zippy and fruity, deep and rich, and the warm spices.

  • First and foremost, Red Poppy Cakery is not an allergen free facility. We have wonderful gluten free, nut free, vegan, dairy free, etc options available, with the understanding that in a shared kitchen space, we can never fully eliminate the risk of cross contamination. Our policy when working on an order with allergy needs is to rewash all items before working in the project. It is up to the client to make their guests aware of our processes so that they can make an informed decision to enjoy baked goods made in our shop. We prefer to make our GF items with some almond flour unless nuts are also listed as an issue. It is the responsibility of the client to make us aware of all allergy needs and concerns and confirm such details again on their invoice prior to payment. We do not have sugar-free items at this time.

  • We do not provide these items, but are happy to be a resource looking over ideas that clients have. It is standard in our wedding planning follow up email that we put in dimension recommendations for a cake size. We are happy to do this by request for others as well.

  • We use deposits to hold space in our calendar for orders serving more than 50 and/or requiring weekend delivery. It is not an extra fee, just an up front one that comes right off the final invoice. It allows us to hone in our availability by marking down capacity in our baking and delivery schedule for committed clients. Cake and cupcake deposits are $150 and dessert bar deposits are $300. All deposits are non-refundable. We handle deposits through emails once we confirm our availability and confirm that an order would require one.

  • All of our dessert catering is priced “a la carte”. Our prices change each calendar year. We are happy to send you a list of our prices for the current planning year. We are also happy to create customized quotes for certain items and counts. A great rough ballpark is to use $5.50 per person for cakes and $8 per person for dessert bars though it will change significantly based on which items you select and the overall design.

  • For all custom orders, we send custom emailed invoices. Payment is required to lock in the order. Our payment terms are 2 weeks in advance of a pick up or delivery (or within 48 hours of processing a last minute request that falls within the 2 weeks).

  • We do offer delivery when we have availability to do so. We need to confirm staffing availability for each delivery request. Our delivery radius is 1.25 hours from our shop. Delivery is priced at $15 in the town of Waterbury on weekdays otherwise it is $.75 per minute of driving and set up on weekdays with a $25 surcharge added onto weekends or holidays.
